About this text
Du Fu wrote this in 757, trapped in rebel-held Chang'an during the An Lushan rebellion. The opening line lives on a single contrast — 國破 (the state is shattered) against 山河在 (the mountains and rivers remain). 家書抵萬金, 'a letter from home is worth ten thousand in gold,' is among the most-quoted lines in all of Chinese poetry.
